In cables with cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation for medium and high voltage, the figure after the “/” indicates the screen cross-section in mm². This is regulated by the technical specifications (TU) under which the cables are manufactured.

The maximum manufacturing length of a cable depends on its design and production technology. Several manufacturing lengths may be wound onto a single drum. For some cables, the maximum length is limited by the drum’s capacity

The flexibility class of a cable is a characteristic that indicates how flexible the conductor is and how well it withstands bending without damage.

In simple terms: it describes how “soft” or “rigid” the cable is.

Main classes:

• Class 1 — rigid (solid conductor, barely bends)
• Class 2 — low flexibility
• Classes 3–4 — medium flexibility
• Classes 5–6 — highly flexible (stranded conductors)

Where it matters:

• for installation in switchboards and walls (usually Class 1–2)
• for movable connections, equipment, and extension cords (Class 5–6)

Class 5–6 flexibility cables are the most flexible cables with stranded (fine-wire) conductors. They are used wherever there is constant bending, movement, or vibration.

Examples of cable brands (Class 5–6):

Most common:

• PVS — PVC-insulated connecting wire (highly flexible; household use and equipment)
• KG (KGn) — flexible cable (for industry and construction sites)
• ShVVP — flat cord (extension cords, household appliances)

More specialized:

• H07RN-F — European rubber flexible cable (equivalent to KG)
• NYM (stranded version) — sometimes available in increased-flexibility options
• PuGV (PV-3) — flexible installation wire (often Class 5)

Where they are used:

• power tools
• extension cords
• portable equipment
• connection of movable mechanisms
• switchboards (for ease of installation)

Important:

• Class 5 — standard high flexibility (most common)
• Class 6 — even more flexible, used less often (specialized equipment, robotics)
